The morning air at Doi Inthanon has a bite to it—cool and sharp as you step out beneath cloud-streaked peaks and the white domes of the Royal Twin Pagodas peeking over rhododendron and oak. On a clear day the valley stretches away in layered blues; closer in, Wachirathan crashes down limestone cliffs and the highland farms of the Hmong and Karen scatter coffee trees and vegetable plots across cooler slopes.
moderate.
8–10 hours (full-day tour, ~2–3 hours hiking).
Comfortable for those with moderate fitness; the trail has steep stairs and uneven boardwalks at altitude so basic endurance and stable footing are needed.
The trail is managed seasonally and is typically open from November 1 to May 31; it closes during the wet season (June–October) for safety and conservation.
Kew Mae Pan is about 3–4 km with 2–3 hours of walking on uneven and sometimes steep boardwalks and steps—suitable for most hikers with moderate fitness.
Park entry fees and a local guide are usually included with organized tours; the trail is maintained by the Ban Khun Klang community and guided groups improve safety and interpretation.
At around 2,000–2,565 m, most visitors tolerate the elevation fine, but light symptoms (headache, fatigue) can occur—pacing, hydration and avoiding alcohol help reduce risk.
Doi Inthanon was designated a national park in the early 1970s and contains royal projects, including the Twin Pagodas, built to honor the late king and queen and to promote highland agriculture.
The park protects montane cloud forest and endemic plants; stay on boardwalks and carry out waste, and support local guide fees which fund community conservation.
