A pale sun lifts over a salt-white plain as the van winds away from San Pedro de Atacama and into the high altiplano. Winded volcanic ridges edge the horizon and, after long stretches of salt and scrub, a band of oxidized rock—Piedras Rojas—stabs red against the sky. Elsewhere, black volcanic cones mirror pale lagoons where flamingos pick through briny shallows; the air grows thin and cold as you climb toward viewing platforms that feel a world away from town.
