Lift off from Kaikōura’s shoreline and the Pacific drops away beneath you, the deep notch of the Kaikōura Canyon cutting like a dark vein into the blue. The helicopter arcs over seabirds and the spouting silhouettes of whales; a marine biologist at your side names each blow and behavior, turning distant giants into readable presence.
