You step from the van at a windswept parking area. The flat top of Helgafell rises ahead—a compact tuya shaped by eruptions beneath a vanished ice sheet. Wind tugs at your jacket and the ridge dares you forward; below Reykjavík and the Reykjanes Peninsula unfold in black lava flows and silver sea.

The guided route is about 8 km with roughly 290 m of ascent and typically takes around five hours including time in lava caves.
Guides provide headlamps and basic instruction; most cave sections require crouching and stable footing but no technical caving skills—people with limited mobility may struggle.
Participants must be 16 or older and have a moderate level of fitness—able to handle steady uphill walking and short sections of loose scree.
Tours can be canceled for bad weather; operators monitor conditions and you’ll be notified about 24 hours prior if the trip is called off.
