Cycle along the picturesque Neckar River from Heidelberg’s Altstadt to the historic town of Ladenburg. Each leg of the journey lasts 45 minutes and offers plenty opportunity to enjoy the scenic landscape and spot local wildlife along the way.
Our first order of business is to pick up high quality rental bikes in downtown Heidelberg. From here we will cycle along the excellent bicycle lanes, built to accommodate Heidelberg’s 40,000 students, to the Neckar River. Here we will leisurely pedal through the beautiful green lawns of the Neckarwiese, where students congregate on long summer days.
Then we will ride past the famous University campus to Neuenheimer Feld, which is lined with rows of fresh vegetables. From here we can enjoy many kilometers of delightful countryside, riding on bicycle-only roads for the rest of the journey.
This tour is a nice time out from busy city life and a great way to see some of the beautiful local German countryside.
After 45 mins we will reach the charming old town of Ladenburg nestled alongside the river. It was once an important Roman settlement and contains the most ruins of any town South of the Rhine. It also has a lovely old market square with timber framed houses dating back to 1532.
Here we will take a break in a nice cafe before exploring some of the fascinating sites of the town, including the first ever garage! Ladenburg was where Karl Benz (founder of the first car, and namesake of Mercedes Benz) chose to have his home.
We will then steadily make our way back to Heidelberg looking out for interesting wildlife such as storks and herons on the way.
