Hear.Say Academy Improv 101: Beginner Improv Course in Ann Arbor

Step onto a small wooden stage in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the city’s lively arts pulse becomes immediate. Hear.Say Academy’s Improv | Level 101: Welcome to Improv is an eight-week primer designed for people with zero stage experience. Meeting in the heart of Ann Arbor, this course breaks improv into practical habits—'Yes, And,' active listening, character anchors, and short-form scene structure—so total beginners can graduate to a live showcase by week eight. The classroom itself is part rehearsal room, part laboratory. Key features include warm-up games, partnered scene work, and a final onstage capstone that invites real audience response. Instructors from the regional comedy scene lead progressive exercises: week one establishes radical support and basic scene starters; weeks two through four develop play and relationship building; weeks five to seven focus on scene foundations and choices; week eight polishes pieces for the graduation showcase. The structure is compact yet rigorous, favoring repetition and immediate feedback over abstract lectures. What makes this offering a standout in Ann Arbor is its beginner-first philosophy and direct link to the local performance circuit. Students leave with practical tools—how to accept offers, create clear status and objective, and convert mistakes into forward motion—and with at least $60 in show tickets and theater perks to keep them involved after class. That emphasis on continuity is part of why this course is such an important thread in the city’s independent theater fabric: it lowers the barrier to entry and sends fresh performers into nearby stages. Practical details matter. The sessions run roughly 2 to 2.5 hours per meeting across eight weeks, and the minimum age is 18. Bring comfortable clothing that allows movement, a readiness to fail fast, and an open ear—listening is the skill that converts improv from games into scenes. Accessibility information and meeting point specifics were not provided; confirm those at booking. For travelers, Ann Arbor’s compact downtown, cafes, and late-night comedy venues make this an appealing evening plan between museum visits and walks along the Huron River. If you want a structured, low-pressure way to sharpen social confidence, thinking speed, and stage skills while connecting to a vibrant regional comedy community, this course is a practical, high-energy entry point.
