You step into a low-slung barn on the open plains of eastern Hokkaido and a broad-headed Dosanko lifts its muzzle, nostrils warm and curious. The air smells of straw and distant snowmelt in spring; the horses shift their weight like calm weather. Dosanko horses have been bred in Hokkaido for centuries, valued for their endurance and role in agrarian life across harsh winters.
The Dosanko is a rare native breed; small-scale farms often emphasize ethical care and limited, educational interactions to reduce stress on the animals.
