You kick out of Hanoi before the city heats up and the road slides open: 48 km of country asphalt, rutted single-track stretches and rice paddies that blur past as you head west toward Ba Vi National Park. After about 1.5 hours in the saddle the lowlands give way to forested slopes and Mount Ba Vi—rising to 1,296 meters—comes into view, its ridgelines mottled with cloud and old-growth trees.
