You leave Shanghai before dawn and the bullet train peels away the city until the hills of Hangzhou rise like a different map. By midmorning you’re walking under bamboo and camphor toward Hupao (Running Tiger) Spring, where water threads from rock and stone sculptures keep company with a small Buddhist shrine.
