At Deep Blue Ceramics, in a bright studio at 5 Souter Place, Weston, ACT 2611, a two-hour Clay Play Class — Ceramic Boob Mugs — turns an ordinary afternoon into a playful, hands-on craft session. This cheeky workshop invites beginners and makers to shape mugs, tumblers, or small planter pots using basic hand-building techniques; instructors guide participants through pinching, coiling, and slab methods, then keep the pieces to dry, glaze, and fire so finished works are ready to collect in three to four weeks. The meeting point is explicit and easy to find, and the studio supplies aprons, all clays, glazes and tools you’ll need to experiment.
The room itself reads like a functional small workshop: long tables with canvas coverings, shelves of bisqueware and glaze samples, a well-seasoned set of wooden ribs and loop tools, and an electric kiln humming quietly in its alcove. That practical equipment is part of the appeal — you’re not watching a demonstration at a distance; you’re standing at the bench with clay under your nails, shaping a vessel you designed. With a maximum of 15 people per session the atmosphere feels intimate yet sociable, a mix of earnest concentration and light-hearted banter when designs get playful.
What makes this offering distinctive for the Canberra area is its directness and accessibility. Canberra’s arts community supports modest, skill-based studios like Deep Blue Ceramics where visitors can access real making processes without a long course commitment. The class emphasizes useful outcomes: sturdy, glazed ceramics intended for daily use rather than fragile showpieces. The studio’s firing schedule and glazing choices aim to produce durable surfaces that hold up to cups, plant soil and regular handling.
Practicalities are simple. Wear clothes you can get messy in; the studio provides aprons. The listed duration is two hours, ideal for a morning or afternoon slot on an itinerary day when indoor options are welcome. The finished items remain with the studio during drying and firing to prevent cracking — collect your pieces about three to four weeks later.
Whether you’re after a quirky souvenir, a date activity with an edge, or an introduction to clay that produces usable results, this workshop delivers. It’s an active, personable way to connect with Canberra’s creative life, learn tangible skills in a short timeframe, and leave with an object that holds the memory of your hands.
Plan to allow time to return for pickup; the studio will contact you when your glazed piece has cooled and is ready. Groups are welcome, and instructors can accommodate small celebrations or creative team-building. Children and older students often enjoy the tactile pace, but confirm booking details and age suitability with Deep Blue Ceramics before reserving.
