Hands-On Pottery for Kids: Chip & Dip Plate Workshop in Towradgi, Wollongong

On the southern edge of Wollongong, in the beachside suburb of Towradgi, Black Duck Studio opens a short and spirited doorway into hands-on pottery for school-age makers. The School Holidays - Kids Chip & Dip Plate workshop teaches children how to roll a slab of clay, trace a template and fold it into a tidy chip-and-dip shape, then decorate with bright underglazes. Over about 90 minutes, instructors guide groups through tactile, paced steps that steer messy curiosity toward a useful piece the whole family can use at snack time. The setting is refreshingly unpretentious: a compact studio space where tables bear fingerprints, tools, and drying plates in various stages. Young participants learn core techniques—slab rolling, scoring, and joining—plus paint application and simple finishing. Because the class is designed for ages 8 and up, instructors tailor demonstrations so kids can work independently while an adult circulates for assistance. The result is not just a plate but a small lesson in process: measuring, shaping, and waiting for the kiln to transform soft clay into tempered ceramic. This experience stands out in the Wollongong recreation scene because it pairs creative education with local youth programming during school holidays. It’s ideal for families who want a hands-on cultural activity away from the beach or for parents looking for an active, screen-free session that yields a tangible memento. The chip-and-dip format is playful—kids leave with something functional and surprisingly clever: a central well for dip with a surrounding rim for chips or toast soldiers. Practical notes: sessions run roughly 1.5 hours and require a basic attention span and ability to handle tools and clay. The studio is wheelchair-friendly at the front entry, though bathroom access is limited. Bring old clothes or an apron; clay likes to cling to fabric. Pieces typically return after glazing and firing, so plan for a pickup date rather than same-day take-home. For visitors staying in Wollongong, this workshop provides a calm, creative afternoon that complements coastal walks, rock pools, and cafes. It’s also a welcoming first step for kids who might later try more advanced wheel or handbuilding classes. Whether you’re aiming to spark a new hobby or simply occupy a school holiday morning with a memorable activity, the chip-and-dip workshop at Towradgi offers a concise, well-taught pottery shortcut into craft confidence. Black Duck Studio brings a hands-on indoor counterpoint to the coast’s outdoor options, offering a creative, weather-proof activity that complements surfing, walking the rock platform, or a café stop. The studio welcomes small groups and school-holiday drop-ins; check FareHarbor listing for booking details and pickup timing. Short classes like this convert otherwise idle holiday hours into a skill-building micro-adventure that families remember long after the sand is gone.
