The raft slides away from shore and the canyon takes over: steep walls of basalt and granite close in, sunlight strips through vertical cracks, and the Salmon River begins to play its moods — calm pools punctuated by punchy Class III drops. In three hours you'll pass sandy beaches, rock bands, and a string of named rapids (Ruby, Lake Creek, Time Zone, Tight Squeeze, Chair, Fiddle, Black Rock) that alternate adrenaline with open-water breathers.

Moderate fitness: you should be comfortable sitting and paddling intermittently for several miles and be able to follow safety instructions.
Operators typically accept children age 8 and up; however, ability to follow instructions and a minimum physical comfort level in moving water are required.

The outfitter supplies a personal flotation device (PFD) and usually helmets; bring your own footwear, sun protection, and any dry bags for personal gear.
