The tour opens on Ban Jelačić Square, where tram tracks hum and the city’s rhythms are clear — vendors call, pigeons wheel, and your guide sketches the map of a town split across two medieval neighbors. From here you move up into Gradec and Kaptol: narrow cobbled streets that slope toward Lotrščak Tower and the tiled roof of St. Mark’s Church. The bell in Lotrščak still marks the hour, a gamified echo of the town’s old gatekeepers, while the Stone Gate offers a quick, quiet moment beneath frescoed arches.

Gradec and Kaptol were rival medieval settlements whose rivalry shaped modern Zagreb; many Upper Town landmarks date to the 13th–17th centuries and reflect Habsburg-era urban growth.
Zagreb promotes walkable city centers and public transport; lower-impact travel like walking tours supports local businesses and reduces congestion.
