The sun breaks over sandstone cliffs as your guide straps the last lifejacket and the raft rocks against the current. You push off into a canyon carved for millions of years; the New River threads through a steep, 1,000-foot gorge and the water immediately demands attention. The next few hours are a compact, focused run of the Lower New—15 named rapids that can punch up to Class V when the river is running high.
