Morning light lifts across black lobes of cooled lava and a thin steam hangs in the gullies—this is Etna at eye level, where you can walk along old craters and across moonscape fields in a half-day. The route climbs to about 2,000 meters, passing oak and beech stands that give way to scoria slopes and jagged pahoehoe flows; the Valle del Bove opens like a raw wound in the volcano’s eastern flank, a wide amphitheater of collapsed terrain and layered lava.

Suitable for moderately fit walkers who can handle uphill sections and uneven volcanic terrain; not a technical climb.
The small Silvestri Crater requires a €5 entry ticket as of late 2025; other lateral craters visited on the route are free.
Families can join—infants may ride in strollers at lower elevations and operators provide infant seats, but steep sections may require carrying little ones.
Ascend slowly, hydrate, avoid alcohol before the hike, and let the guide know if you feel dizzy or short of breath; the walk is moderate but reaches ~2,000 m.
