Read the full experience

Dawn skims the rim of Lake Okeechobee and the water answers with a low, steady hush — the kind that promises opportunity. On a half-day charter out of the lake’s southern marina, anglers slip past bulrushes and shallow flats where the water seems to dare you to throw a line. The guide trims the engine, hands you a rod, and points toward a patch of lily pads that often holds giants.

Adventure tips

Bring polarized sunglassesPolarized lenses cut surface glare and make it easier to spot structure and feeding fish.

Hydrate and use sunscreenThe Florida sun is strong on open water; bring extra water and reef-safe sunscreen even for short trips.

Wear non-slip shoesBoat decks can be slick — closed-toe, non-marking shoes improve safety while casting and handling fish.

Know catch-and-release best practicesIf releasing fish, wet your hands, support the bass horizontally, and minimize air exposure to improve survival.

Recommended gear

Polarized sunglasses: Reduce glare to locate structure and protect eyes from reflected UV.
Broad-spectrum sunscreen: Protects skin during prolonged exposure on open water.
Brimmed hat or buff: Shields face and neck from sun and reduces glare when sight-fishing.
Light rain jacket: Protects against sudden squalls or wind-driven spray, especially in spring storms.
