About

Step into another world on our Fern Canyon Tour, a guided journey through one of the most enchanting landscapes on California’s North Coast. Nestled in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, this narrow, high-walled canyon is draped in a living tapestry of ferns and mosses, with crystal-clear water flowing along the canyon floor.

Led by one of our expert naturalist guides, you’ll learn about the fascinating natural history, geology, and ecology of this ancient canyon. Your guide will point out the many different species of ferns that cling to the sheer walls—including sword ferns, five-finger ferns, and lady ferns—as well as the wildlife and plant communities that thrive in this cool, moist microclimate.

As you walk through the creek bed (don’t worry—rain boots are provided!), you’ll understand why Fern Canyon has served as a dramatic backdrop for Hollywood. The towering green walls have been featured in Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World, BBC’s Walking with Dinosaurs, and several documentaries, making it a favorite filming location for its untouched, primeval beauty.

All of our tours launch from Elk Meadow Cabins, three miles north of Orick, surrounded by National Park land. If you haven't booked your stay yet, please check us out at www.elkmeadowcabins.com!
