You step out of the van in Barano and the air tastes faintly of salt and pumice. The trail quickly leaves the road: a hollowed path climbs between low stone walls and terraced vineyards, every turn opening onto the Gulf of Naples with Capri balanced on the horizon and Vesuvius looming across the water.
