A shaft of light slices through limestone and falls onto clear, cool water — the cenote answers the heat of the Riviera Maya with a cavernous hush. Visitors descend wooden steps, trade the glare of the road for a world of speleothems and mineral-rich water, then later trade the hush for the slow, rhythmic paddling of a snorkel as sea turtles pull through shallow seagrass in Akumal Bay.

Turtles are commonly seen in Akumal Bay year-round because they graze the seagrass beds, but wildlife sightings can't be guaranteed; guides maximize your opportunity by visiting calm areas and enforcing no-touch rules.
No advanced experience is required — the tour provides equipment and a guide; participants should be comfortable in water and able to swim short distances independently.
