About This Adventure

Step back in time at the East Broad Top Railroad, where you can explore America’s best-preserved belt-driven machine shop and an impressive eight-stall roundhouse. This unique tour offers an authentic glimpse into the late 19th and early 20th centuries, showcasing the remarkable self-sufficiency of a narrow-gauge railroad.

Take a true step back in time into one of America's most well-preserved belt-driven machine shops, eight-stall roundhouse, and so much more!

Because the East Broad Top was built 'narrow-gauge,' with rails only 3 feet apart rather than the 'standard' width, the operation had to be entirely self-sufficient. This resulted in the construction of an extensive shop complex to maintain the railroad's fleet of locomotives and cars.

Completely frozen in time, those buildings...and the machinery inside of them... still exist today and allow visitors a one-of-a-kind chance to experience the late 19th/early 20th Century in a remarkably intact way.

Note: Tours take visitors over uneven ground, and require crossing several train tracks. Closed-toed shoes are strongly recommended.

Duration: Approx. 1 Hour

  • Freight Office
  • Roundhouse (Stalls 1-3)
  • Machine Shop

The Freight Office: !Freight Office All tours begin at the historic Freight Office. Be sure to arrive a bit early to enjoy a small selection of displays and artifacts from the EBT's past. Here, your guide will give you an overview of the railroad's history, and how/why it survived for us to enjoy today.

The Roundhouse !Roundhouse The heart of any steam-powered railroad was the roundhouse. This building, one of the oldest railroad structures on the property, houses our fleet of six narrow-gauge steam locomotives, among several other unique pieces of equipment.

The Machine Shop !MachineShop This sprawling facility kept the railroad rolling. Skilled laborers worked hard to maintain, and even construct, the EBT's roster of engines and cars. A stationary steam engine powered each machine through an elaborate working of overhead line shafts and belts. Today, this complex is one of the few remaining sites this intact anywhere in the United States.
