The van pulls out of Oaxaca Centro before sunrise and the valley exhales: red-tile roofs, market smoke and then open hills. Thirty minutes later you stand at the base of San Sebastián Tutla’s cliffs — steep faces with pocketed holds, bright chalk marks and a line of local guides setting out tamales and coffee. A quick safety briefing becomes rhythm: knots, partner checks, warm-up, then ropes run and bodies move against the stone.

The Central Valleys area has long been home to Zapotec communities and agricultural terraces; climbing here sits alongside living cultural landscapes and markets in Oaxaca City.
Stick to established trails, pack out all trash and avoid leaving chalk or gear anchored on unapproved natural features to reduce impact on the crags.
