The trail opens under a low canopy where breath-steamy air smells of damp leaf litter and ancient wood. Headlamps carve narrow beams through a tangle of vines; the guide’s spotlight picks out a pair of reflective eyes and the forest exhales its night life. You move quietly along informal tracks two kilometres from the Coral Sea, confident but small beneath trees that have stood since before mammals dominated.

Common nocturnals include possums, frogs, geckos and bats; guides use spotlights, thermal imaging and UV lights to locate animals—sightings aren’t guaranteed, but the habitat diversity is high.
