Guided Hiking to Sanguinho Village with Flow Tours

São Miguel Island, part of Portugal’s Azores archipelago, offers a distinctive blend of volcanic landscapes, lush greenery, and ocean vistas that few other destinations can match. On the island’s southeastern coast, Flow Tours invites travelers on a guided hike that reveals one of São Miguel’s best-kept secrets: the hidden village of Sanguinho. This carefully curated seven-hour trail experience begins with a trek through Faial da Terra’s vibrant forest trails, where native endemic plants such as laurel and faya thrive amidst rugged terrain shaped by ancient volcanic activity. As you follow the trail, the sound of cascading water grows louder, culminating at Salto do Prego — a striking waterfall that drops into a natural pool surrounded by steep basalt cliffs. The crisp mist and secluded setting make this a perfect spot to pause and take in the island’s raw beauty. Continuing the journey, the trail leads to Sanguinho, a restored village that once faced abandonment but now offers a window into traditional island life with its stone houses and terraced gardens. Lunch here is more than a meal; it’s a chance to savor local flavors in an intimate, rustic atmosphere, including dishes prepared with fresh, regional ingredients. Afterward, the trail descends toward Povoação, São Miguel’s first-ever settlement, where historic streets and coastal views tell stories of early settlers braving the Atlantic. For those willing, the day closes with a refreshing swim in the invigorating Atlantic waters, a rewarding contrast to the day’s rigorous hiking. Flow Tours stands out as a vital local operator offering immersive access to these hidden corners, balancing thoughtful stewardship with authentic cultural encounters. Whether you seek scenic adventure, cultural insight, or unique photographic opportunities, this guided hike is a standout in the Azores’ vibrant outdoor scene.
