Early light strips the Sonoran plain into long shadows; the ATVs sit ready like compact beasts waiting for the signal. Riders meet at a desert staging area north of Phoenix, don helmets and goggles, and listen as guides outline a route that threads washbeds, saguaro-dotted flats and rocky foothills at the base of the Bradshaw Mountains.
