The road eases east, towns blur into fields, and the outline of Edinburgh rises—a mix of stone roofs and the unmistakable bulk of Castle Rock—an ancient volcanic plug that has shaped the city’s skyline for millennia.

Edinburgh’s core formed around Castle Rock and the Royal Mile; the castle has been a strategic stronghold since at least the Middle Ages and Holyrood Palace served as the Scottish monarch’s residence from the 16th century.
High visitor numbers put pressure on fragile stonework and narrow streets—stick to marked paths, avoid climbing on monuments, and carry out litter to protect these historic places.
