Cappadocia’s inhabitants carved dwellings, churches and refuges directly into volcanic tuff from Hellenistic times through the Byzantine era; underground cities like Derinkuyu expanded during periods of invasion to shelter entire communities.
Erosion and unregulated climbing can damage fragile tuff formations and frescoes—stick to marked paths, avoid touching painted surfaces and follow guide instructions to minimize impact.
