You slide out of the city as traffic thins and the air changes — a softer, cooler current that carries the scent of maple and apple orchards. Windows down, the road curves through rolling farmland and ribbons of cedar forest until a ribbon of exposed red earth appears: the Cheltenham Badlands, where ancient layers of shale and silt dare you to trace their story with your eyes.

The Cheltenham Badlands expose sedimentary layers laid down millions of years ago; the Caledon area later developed as an agricultural and equestrian landscape shaped by settlers and diverse immigrant communities.
The badlands are geologically fragile — stick to marked paths and avoid climbing on exposed shale. Supporting local cideries and packing out waste helps sustain small rural businesses and trails.
