Before the sun clears Melbourne’s skyline you’re already rolling west, the bus tracing the highway as the city gives way to flat agricultural plains. By mid-morning the road climbs into Gariwerd — the ancient sandstone ribs of the Grampians — and the air sharpens with eucalyptus and the distant clatter of rock.
