The helicopter lifts off from a compact seaplane and heliport near the Sausalito houseboats, and within minutes the city’s spine unfurls beneath you—the rust-red arc of the Golden Gate Bridge, the punted skyline of downtown, and the stern outline of Alcatraz floating in the bay. The air smells of salt and oil; fog fingers at the bridge on cooler mornings, then thins to reveal the Marin hills.
