You step into a landscape that shifts every hour: geothermal steam rising from a boiling field, a waterfall throwing itself over layered basalt, and the hard blue of Langjökull glacier ahead like a distant sea of ice. The day starts in Reykjavík and moves east into Thingvellir, where rift valleys split the island and the first Icelandic parliament met more than a millennium ago.
moderate.
9 hours.
Moderate fitness recommended—able to handle several short walks on uneven, sometimes icy ground and climb modest viewing paths.
Pickup and drop-off in Reykjavík are included; exact pickup point and time are provided at booking or by the operator.
Minimum age for the tour is 6; for snowmobile or buggy add-ons drivers must be 18 with a valid license—children can ride as passengers.
The operator may alter the route or cancel glacier access for safety; you can receive a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours in advance or if the tour is cancelled due to weather.
Stops include locations where you can purchase lunch and use facilities; bring snacks and water for comfort between stops.
Thingvellir is both a geological rift and the historic site of Alþingi, the world’s oldest continuous parliament established around 930 AD.
The area’s fragile mosses and ground cover recover slowly—stay on marked paths. Glacial retreat is visible on Langjökull; choose operators that follow sustainable access practices.
