The boat slips clear of Leigh and the coastline opens into a sharp, wind-sculpted headland where the sea changes color and the work of waves is visible on the rocks. Onboard Ocean Tales, advanced snorkelers trade the harbor’s hum for the hush of underwater kelp forests. Clear, cool water draws the eye down where snapper patrol rocky drop-offs and schools of Blue Maomao flash like coins in motion.

Yes—this trip is aimed at advanced snorkelers who are comfortable with open-water conditions, currents, and boat entries.
Basic snorkeling equipment (wetsuit, mask, snorkel, fins) is provided and available for use after the tour that day.
Minimum age is 12; participants aged 12–16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Trips are canceled for unsafe sea conditions; you’ll receive a full refund if canceled at least 24 hours before departure or if the operator cancels for weather.
The area became one of New Zealand’s earliest marine reserves in the 1970s, created to protect reef ecosystems and provide a living laboratory for science and education.
The reserve strictly prohibits taking marine life; visitors are asked to minimize contact with the reef, use reef-safe sunscreen, and follow all guide instructions to limit impact.
