The lake darkens from green to ink as the sun slips behind the Vancouver Island ridges and you push off from Gordon Bay Provincial Park. LED lights beneath each board turn the water into a slow-moving galaxy; your paddle strokes send ripples that briefly illuminate submerged logs and drifting kelp. The guide gives a short history of the Cowichan Lake region before you head the 400 m across to the Gordon Bay Islands, then down the south shore toward moss-draped cliffs that rise abruptly from the water.
