The boat slips away from a shallow sandbank and the sea opens into a palette of blue—pale turquoise above reef flats, deep sapphire where coral drops away. Early in the morning you’ll be starting from Kuta Lombok, crossing calm bays to a string of tiny islets: mangrove-clad Gili Petagan, the photogenic sand pile of Gili Kapal (Gili Ships), the reef-fringed lunch stop at Gili Bidara, and finally Gili Kondo for long, clear snorkel swims.
