The morning drive north from Amsterdam eases out of the city's glass and brick into a flat, watery landscape where canals stitch fields into islands. By the time you reach Giethoorn the air smells faintly of grass and river; thatched-roof homes sit on narrow strips of land and wooden bridges lean across waterways that dare you to slow down.

Giethoorn developed from peat extraction and small island farms; houses were built along canals formed by digging and drainage, creating the car-free village pattern still visible today.
The surrounding peatland is sensitive—stick to marked paths, avoid trampling reeds, and favor local guides who practice low-impact boating to protect water quality and wildlife.
