The Arch commemorates westward expansion and frames the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial; the Old Courthouse was the site of the Dred Scott cases that helped shape U.S. civil rights history.
The Gateway Arch grounds are maintained as public parkland — stick to paved paths, use public trash facilities, and avoid disturbing plantings to help preserve the riverfront environment.
