Galle Fort evolved from a 16th-century Portuguese outpost into a major 17th-century Dutch fortification, later adapted by the British; its walls and street plan reflect layered colonial control and trade networks.
Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with active conservation programs; visitors should avoid climbing fragile walls, take litter home, and support local businesses that practice sustainable tourism.
