You step off a 4x4 onto a blinding white plain and the world simplifies to horizon, salt and sky. The Salar de Uyuni stretches in every direction — a hard, rippled crust that reflects light like a frozen sea. Cacti-studded Isla Incahuasi rises from the salt in the middle distance, a small island of weathered coral rock and giant columnar cacti that invite a short, breath-stealing climb.

The Salar sits around 3,650 m (12,000 ft). Mild altitude effects are common; acclimatize in Uyuni or La Paz, drink water, avoid alcohol and notify guides if you feel severe symptoms.
