A humid dawn flattens the Central Plains as the minivan pulls away from Colombo and the landscape opens into rice paddies and thorn scrub. On the horizon a sheer orange column rises—Sigiriya, the so-called Lion Rock—its vertical face cutting the sky. The climb begins with stone steps and a pair of weathered lion paws at the base, and by midmorning the wind starts to push explorers around the summit ruins.
