You roll out of Prague before dawn and the highway unfurls westward; the Vltava widens and, 2.5 hours later, Český Krumlov appears as a compact cluster of red roofs folded around a tight river bend. The castle perches above the town like an older brother watching the water dare you to follow it, and the cobbled lanes below lead past painted burgher houses, medieval pubs and a stone bridge that carries the promenade like an old aqueduct.
