A gray morning from Antigua gives way to a ribbon of road, then pine forest, and finally the austere black slopes of Pacaya. The guide’s voice is steady: the trail climbs through shaded pines, then sheds soil for ash. At the upper section the ground grows brittle and warm; steam hisses from fumaroles and the cone exhales sulfur-scented breath. From the rim the Valle de las Vacas and nearby cones cut the horizon; on active days small spurts of lava pulse like a slow heartbeat.
