Common sightings include elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, and hippos; predators like lions are seen less predictably but are possible during dawn or dusk drives.

Mikumi was established as a national park in the mid-1960s to protect the Mkata Plain and its wildlife corridors connecting the southern highlands and Selous ecosystem.
Park management focuses on anti-poaching patrols and community-based programs; visitors help by following guidelines, minimizing noise, and not feeding wildlife.
