A chill before dawn lifts off the Andes as a minivan peels away from Cusco toward Mollepata and the high saddle at Soraypampa. Hikers spill out into thin air at about 3,900 m, breath hitching while the trail climbs steeply toward a rim where Humantay Lake waits—an intense turquoise bowl pressed against the Salkantay massif. Wind knifes across the moraine; glaciers above the lake seem to push cold light into the water.
