Before dawn, a minivan peels out of Cusco and the city’s stonework fades into a silhouette of crests. The road climbs through puna grass and Andean farmland, and by mid-morning you stand at Soraypampa beneath an enormous sky: the trail narrows, the air thins, and snowfields of the Salkantay massif watch the route to Humantay Lagoon. The lake appears like a cut of glass—vibrant turquoise framed by glacial moraine—its water fed by the melt of nearby peaks.
