A cool wind cuts across the plateau as your 4x4 grinds up from Salalah and the mountain opens into a high, stony plain. At 2,100 meters Jabal Samhan looms above the Dhofar plain, and the entrance to Teeq (Tiq) Cave sits like a dark mouth on the ridge. The guide points along a switchback; birds call from low shrubs and herds of camels move like slow punctuation along the skyline.
moderate.
4–6 hours (hiking portion).
Suitable for hikers with moderate fitness able to manage uneven terrain and short steep sections.
The guided hike covers about 6 km total with approximately 300–400 m of elevation gain and around four hours of walking, embedded in a full-day tour with transfers and lunch.
The tour is described as physically easy to moderate; infants can ride in strollers during transfers but the trail has uneven sections and short steep parts that may be challenging for limited mobility.
Private hotel pickup/drop-off, air-conditioned 4x4 transport, English-speaking Omani guide, bottled water and a local lunch are included per the itinerary.
Yes—large herds of camels and goats are common, and local birdlife frequents the scrub; always follow your guide’s instructions around animals.
Jabal Samhan overlooks former frankincense caravan routes; the highlands provided seasonal grazing and refuge for centuries of local communities.
The highland ecosystem is fragile—stick to trails, avoid disturbing grazing areas and pack out all waste to limit erosion and livestock disruption.
