Before sunrise the van eases out of Cusco and the Andes rearrange the sky—long ridgelines dark against a bruised horizon. You stop in the village of Pachar for a hot breakfast, then climb toward a 3,900‑meter ridge where Inti Punku (the Sun Gate) sits like an old lookout over the Urubamba River. The trail alternates between packed earth, loose shingle and short stone steps carved into ancient Inca quarries; patches of scrub and Polylepis thin forest breathe cold air across your face.
