You push off in the early light after a short transfer from Coimbra, tires humming as the road softens into a former railway bed. The Ecopista do Vouga unfurls ahead—rail ballast replaced by compacted gravel and tarmac—descending through vineyards, oak groves and ribboning farmland. The Vouga River keeps company below, at times daring you to look down at its cut banks and at other times hiding behind hedgerows.
