Tsarevets was the political and religious center for the Second Bulgarian Empire (12th–14th centuries); Buzludzha was completed in 1981 as a monument to socialist history and later abandoned after the regime change.
Both sites face preservation challenges: Tsarevets benefits from ongoing conservation of masonry and visitor management, while Buzludzha’s concrete and mosaics suffer from neglect—visit responsibly and avoid contributing to vandalism.
