You must be at least 10 years old, have adequate swimming skills and need to be in good physical health.

What to expect

The Level 1 Freediver course contains four phases:

  • eLearning
  • Knowledge development session
  • Confined water sessions
  • Open water sessions

Sessions will be held in the blue water of the Gulf Stream off South Florida, or at a spring fed lake near Fort Lauderdale (weather permitting).

Instruction

Day 0- An instructor led knowledge development session (online zoom meeting) to learn the safety, science, physiology and psychology behind freediving. We will also cover diaphragmatic breathing and relaxation techniques, breath-up steps, recovery breathing, and equalization techniques.

Day 1- Confined water sessions, where we will cover safety skills & your role as a buddy, static apnea, dynamic apnea and how to make a proper water entry.

Day 2- Open water sessions 1 & 2 to practice free immersion (pull downs), constant weight, duck dives, proper buddy procedures and a rescue scenario at depth.

Equipment

Using gear designed specifically for freediving is best, however, in this course, you may be able to use snorkeling equipment you already own. You will need:

  • mask & snorkel
  • bi-fins
  • weight belt & weights
  • wetsuit/ exposure protection

NOTE if renting gear:

  • Try before you buy! If you're renting a wetsuit and decide you love it, you can apply your rental credit towards purchase
  • If you are renting freediving fins, it is recommended to bring a pair of socks (regular, lycra, or neoprene)
