Morning light breaks over the glacier-fed pools as your minibus leaves Franz Josef, the road folding into rainforest and ocean views. The West Coast’s restless Tasman Sea hurls surf onto black sand while the Haast River threads the valley, daring you to slow down and look. Over the course of a long, clean day you move from coastal plains to the alpine edges — Thunder Creek Falls dropping from a hanging valley, the Blue Pools’ surreal turquoise, and the wide mirror of Lake Wānaka with the lone tree watching the mountains.
