Morning light lifts off Table Mountain as the van peels away from Cape Town and the N2 unfurls toward the mountains. Fields open, vines lean into the sun, and by mid-morning the air smells faintly of oak and cut grass. In Stellenbosch the guide parks beneath plane trees; the town’s white-gabled Cape Dutch houses and narrow canals present a quiet counterpoint to the vineyard rhythm ahead.

The Franschhoek valley was settled by French Huguenots in the 17th–18th centuries, which shaped the region’s viticulture and many estate names; Stellenbosch grew as a university town centered on Cape Dutch architecture.
Many estates practice sustainable viticulture and demand for water-wise farming is high; visitors should stick to marked paths and avoid disturbing fynbos to protect local biodiversity.
